The Georgia Pick & Bow Traditional Music School - August 10, 2007

AUDITION TIMES ANNOUNCED FOR PICK & BOW INSTRUCTORS
Auditions to select teachers for the Georgia Pick & Bow Traditional Music School and its first series of lessons in traditional music for Lumpkin County students is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8-9, at the Vickery House in Dahlonega.

Skilled musicians who are able to play several traditional string instruments, such as the banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin and upright bass and teach “roots” music including bluegrass and old-time to young people, should apply as instructors. Candidates will be expected to participate in an interview, perform music, teach a sample music lesson, and provide evidence of a background criminal check.

Auditions will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on  Saturday, Sept. 8, and 3 until 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9. The Vickery House is located at West Main Street and Vickery Drive across from the campus of North Georgia College & State University. The Georgia Pick &  Bow Traditional Music School, in  cooperation with the NGCSU Appalachian Studies Center, seeks to preserve the traditional music of  North Georgia. Its 10 week semester begins October 4th at Lumpkin County Middle School. Classes will be held on Thursdays from 3:30-4:45 p.m., and the semester ends on Dec. 10th.  Lumpkin County students in grades 4 through 12 may apply. Student tuition cost for the course is $50, with a $25 non-refundable deposit due upon registration and the balance due the first day of class. Some need-based tuition and instrument scholarships are available.

During “Passing the Pick & Bow”, students will have the opportunity to learn to play an instrumental solo as well as participate in jam sessions with other students on other instruments. Two student recitals will be scheduled during the 10-week course.
